Tie Me Down

Tie Me Down

Music video Tie Me Down (DE STAAT feat. Luwten) plays with the idea of love and attraction being a literal force of nature. Pushing a man and woman together: he installing black flags and she white flags, which symbolise freedom but also mark territory.

giving in to natural forces

Following the release of their 2019 album Bubble Gum the Dutch five piece, De Staat, release a video accompanying a song that perfectly encapsulates the modern perils of love and fear of losing your freedom. Tie Me Down notably has the album’s catchiest chorus, courtesy of the interplay between vocalist Torre and Dutch star Luwten. Director Ruben Van Leer wanted to capture the elements that contextualise the story behind an album that takes influence from Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age. Torre, conveys this very idea by saying “The video plays with the idea of love and attraction being a literal force of nature. Pushing us together. We used the flag because it symbolises freedom, but also marks territory. Shot in a black and white world.” Van Leer adds: “Tessa and Torre make way through hazardous winds, risky quakes and compelling gravities to surrender in a yin-yang pose. I loved the song for giving stage to an epic visual journey that fits one of the most imaginative Dutch pop bands of my generation.”
